23 DAYS TILL GRADUATION: The Time I Snuck Into a Marc Jacobs Fashion Show!

During my freshman year, I had a dream that a high school friend and I snuck into the Marc Jacobs fashion show. The next week we actually did it. It was proof to me that I wanted to work in fashion, and that if you decide to do something, you can make it happen.

Standing in the long line outside the Lexington Armory, my friend and I stood close together. I was scantily dressed for the below 40 degree weather, wearing a short black dress, opaque black tights, a grey turtle neck, a pink plaid button down and a faux leather jacket. Suffering for fashion.

We stood there arms linked trying to keep warm as we waited for the security guards to open the doors to the Armory. While waiting in line, I spotted someone that went to my school. It turned out her mother worked for Marc Jacobs as a seamstress. "They were working up until an hour ago!" She said.

The silver bars moved and like ants, all of us fashion fanatics moved closer to the door. They were only letting people with invites in at that moment, but we somehow pushed our way to the front--pretending we had tickets. I grabbed my scared friend by the hand, dragged him up the stairs, and whispered, "WE'RE IN!" So, I thought.

The next stop was bag-check. We got in line to get our bags check, but the attendants took too long so we hopped over the low chain that barricaded the bag-check area. As we proceeded to the fashion arena, two giant security guards in black suits asked to see our invites. Thinking quickly on our feet, my friend and I looked at each other and I said, "Oh crap. Did you leave them at the hotel??!!" We turned around and stood on the side where the publicists were all lined up. Holding their clipboards and headset, they looked like fashion traffic controllers. It was their job to walk VIP to their seats. My friend insisted I ask them how we could get in. I bashfully did and one of them snidely said, "There's no way. Sorry." Two minutes later, they handed us their invitations because they didn't need them anymore.

We waltzed back towards the big scary guards, waved our newly possessed golden tickets in their face and walked right-on in!

When I look back at that day, I still can't believe I did it. I seriously didn't think it would happen. I thought the worse that could happen is we don't get in and I get to just spend quality time with a good friend. Since that day, I haven't snuck into any other shows. Then I was young, slightly rambunctious and super excited about getting my feet wet in the fashion world. I am still young, excited about fashion, but not rambunctious. After going to a lot of fashion shows thanks to my internships, you gain another perspective on said events.
